Thailand's Dream beaches - Frank's ranking

In my opinion, Thailand's finest beaches can compete with the other top beaches in Southeastasia nicely. Weather You liked Bali or Lombok in Indonesia, Sumatras Westcoast or the Malaysian dreambeaches before, You can find equivalents in Siam - but You have to look further than the colorful brochures of the travelagents!
Dream beaches in my ranking score for absence of non-organic waste, cleanliness of water and total lack of annoying beach salespeople and noisy tourists. I also don't give a damn for costly beachchairs or umbrellas, seadoo rentals or icecream- and beer-vendors. I have my beach mat everywhere I go and sometimes a hammock, my own well stocked coolerbag and a good book or snorkel equipment along - that's it!
Best beaches to meet my own standards are gulfside, Songkhla province and south of it. Some decent ones between (but excluding) Khao Lak in Ranong Province and Phuket Island are to be found as well, but they are getting fewer and fewer due to developments there. So many nice beaches in Thailand have been Patonged, Chawenged or Ao Nanged, Lamai'd or White Beached.
Thousands of Tourists have other preferences than I do, so I keep being on the run from "developments", synthetic tourist attractions and mass tourism for over a decade now. I recently wrote over half of my latest novel on the beaches of Narathiwat, Koh Phayam and Pattani, where I found the tranquility to tackle such a task without sacrificing much on bathing, swimming and snorkeling. Unbeatable accommodation values often go along with virtually touristfree beaches, my weekly budget wasn't stressed and I had the privilege to meet some great people amongst the locals. To give you a better idea of what I am talking about, I will let some pictures speak for themself:

A perfect, halfmoon shaped beach called Ao Manao in Narathiwat province is my favorite chillout beach. Just 10 Motorcycle minutes from the Guesthouses and Hotels in Narathiwat town to the south, it is one of Thailand's finest beach jewels in my opinion. Shady pinetrees along the entire backside with very basic facilities (shower, toilets) provided by the National park rangers here. Admission hasn't been collected for years and tourists or visitors are a rare sight. The middle section has been hit hard by wave erosion in 2008, but the southern flank stretches still in all its beauty for several Kilometers. On some days you may encounter a local lady, collecting shells on the shoreline for her cooking pot but I haven't seen a single tourist here over all the times I went there. In the evenings, You may watch local youngsters playing with their kites or taking a plunge in the warm waters. The beach is shallow and suitable for little kids, especially the southern flank of Ao Manao.

Huge boulders along sections of the beach divide the frontal part of the southern flank from the lengthy back part, that stretches as far as the King's southern residence perimeter here.
Beachwalks are a delight as the nature provides quite a number of rare floral sights and constant breezes make it more comfortable on a hot day. Some basic tables cut from raw stones here have been my private borrowed desk for weeks at a time, the noises from wind and sea were an added bonus, trees enough around to tie a hammock to, sheer paradise!

I'd never dreamed of going to a beach in Narathiwat before you started writing about the place last year. But if i get the chance i'll definitely check the place out. Im working for an online guidebook now, so i'll see if i can get the job of going down to write about Narathiwat.

By the way Frank, i heard you won a camera, is that right?

    @ Stephen Cleary

Indeed, the year 2008 saw our first participations in photo and video contests, where some have awarded either to my fiancée or myself a prize for our contributions.
Since I can't spot any member-to-member messaging possibility here, I have embedded my email should You require some additional helpful hints for Your upcoming trips to the extreme south.

    -continuation of "Thailand's dream beaches":

Another one of those sandy stretches of coastline, that I consider worth my while for it's quality and situation is located on the seaward side of the middle section of the Pattani-Peninsula, also known as Tha Chee Cape,(Pattani Province, Yaring district) that protrudes from it's southern foothold on the mainland way into the gulf and shelters parts of the Pattani Bay from the surf. A simple asphalt road (National Highway 4231) is prone to be destroyed by erosion soon, but at present it is a manageable drive in a regular car to get there.

This is the type of beach where Your footprints are still the only ones visible on the next day or two, unless a big wave decides differently. This beach is not as tranquil as the aforementioned southern flank of Ao Manao, but it boasts an Eldorado for beachcombers and would be a famous surfing site on the gulf if it's location wouldn't be in the strife-torn extreme south of Thailand. Natural shade is available but not as widespread and omnipresent as along Ao Manao. Swimming pleasures aren't also without risks as strong currents and surf here demand special attention. I quite like this beach for a nice oceanside picnick, sitting on driftwood and enjoy the permanent breezes. Bring all You need to eat and drink, but please make sure to leave nothing but footprints!
